The Propagule Hunt & Living Shorelines Locally in Florida, we operate strictly within state environmental regulations, utilizing the 1996 Mangrove Trimming and Preservation Act (Sections 403.9321-403.9333, F.S.). While altering rooted mangroves requires highly complex permitting, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) explicitly dictates that a permit is not required to collect floating, non-rooted propagules (mangrove seeds) from public shorelines. We host gamified, kid-friendly "Propagule Hunts" to safely crowdsource vast quantities of these floating seeds for our nursery.
Once matured in our Stuart holding grounds, these mangroves are replanted directly along shorelines under the FDEP "Living Shoreline" exemption (Rule 62-330.051).
